Google Business Profile Audit Checklist for Service Businesses (2026)
A complete GMB audit framework for freelancers and agencies — categories, NAP, reviews, posts, photos, and red flags for HVAC, plumbing, and local trades.

Google Business Profile drives local pack visibility — often more than the website for emergency trades. Many businesses have claimed profiles but never optimized them. A structured audit is a $300–$800 product you can deliver in 2–4 hours, then upsell to monthly GMB management at $400–$900/mo. This is different from ongoing optimization prospecting: here you productize the audit itself as a foot-in-the-door offer with a fixed scope and fixed price.
Pre-audit intake
- Manager access to GBP (not view-only).
- Business legal name vs DBA vs marketing name.
- Service area vs storefront — SAB rules apply.
- List of actual service cities, not wish list.
- Primary phone: tracking number vs main line.
- Website URL and correct canonical landing page.
- Top 3 competitors in local pack for target keywords.
Section 1: Foundation (NAP and categories)
Business name: no keyword stuffing unless it's the legal name. Must match signage and website footer. Primary category: most specific accurate category (Plumber, not only Contractor). Secondary categories: max relevance, not spam. Address and service area: if SAB, address hidden correctly; no virtual office violations; service areas match where they actually work and where the site has pages.
Red flag: multiple GBP listings for same brand at same address — merge or fix before Google suspends one. Phone and website: primary phone consistent with marketing; website links to relevant location page if multi-city.
Section 2: Profile completeness
- Business hours including holiday special hours.
- Appointment or booking URL if used.
- Services listed with descriptions.
- Attributes (veteran-owned, etc.) only if true.
- Opening date if helpful for trust.
Incomplete profiles lose trust and ranking signals. Score each section pass/fail for the client deliverable.
Section 3: Reviews
Benchmarks for trades in competitive cities: top 3 local pack often 50–200+ reviews, 4.5+ stars, at least one review in the last 30 days, 80%+ owner responses personalized. Audit review velocity over six months, negative themes (pricing, no-show), and policy risk (incentivized reviews).
Deliverable: five review response templates plus a monthly ask process the owner or your retainer can run.
Section 4: Photos and media
Logo and cover current. Ten plus exterior, interior, team, and vehicle photos. No stock-only gallery. Short jobsite video if available. Photos increase engagement and conversion from Maps — document exactly what's missing with screenshots.
Section 5: Posts, Q&A, messaging
Posts: last post under 14 days ideal; mix offers, projects, tips, seasonal; CTA links correct. Q&A: seed 5–10 real FAQs; monitor spam answers. Messaging: enabled only if client can respond under 24 hours; auto-reply or booking link configured.
Section 6: SERP integration
Search three keywords (e.g. ac repair plus city, emergency plumber plus city). Does client appear in local pack? Position 1–3 or buried? Compare reviews, photos, and posts vs top 3. Website landing page relevance for query. Document gap analysis in a one-page table — this is what sells the retainer.

Sort pest control operators by neglect score — audit prospects before competitors pitch them.
Pricing your GMB audit
- PDF checklist plus Loom walkthrough: $350–$500 (2–3 hours).
- Audit plus 30-day action plan: $600–$900 (4–6 hours).
- Audit plus implementation one-time: $1,200–$2,500 (8–15 hours).
Upsell: GMB plus reviews retainer $500–$1,000/mo — posts, Q&A, review alerts, monthly report. Takes 2–3 hours per client once templated.
Sample executive summary
Business: [Name] HVAC Phoenix. Not visible for 'ac repair phoenix' — competitors A, B, C have 120+ reviews each. Top fixes: primary category, 8 new photos, review workflow, weekly posts, service area alignment. 90-day goal: top 3 for two money keywords. Recommended: GMB Sprint $1,500 plus $750/mo management.
Finding audit clients
Prospect businesses with 4.0 stars and stalled review count, last GMB post 6+ months ago, wrong category, or thin service list. New acquisitions (PE rollup) often have messy multi-location GBP — pitch the marketing lead or new GM. Build lists by city times trade so every pitch references local competitors by name.
Tools
GBP plus incognito local search. Local Falcon or BrightLocal for grid ranks. DealRaw for prospect lists by metro and category — faster than manual Maps scrolling for 50 audits per month.
Converting audit to retainer
Deliver the audit on a 30-minute call, not by email. Walk through the top five fixes live. End with: 'I can implement all of this in 30 days for $1,200, then maintain it for $650/mo.' Conversion rate from paid audit to retainer should exceed 40% if the audit is specific and the client sees competitors ahead of them in Maps.
White-label audit for agencies
Local marketing agencies can white-label your GMB audit under their brand at $297 cost, resell at $497–$797. You deliver the checklist and Loom; they keep the client relationship. Volume play: five agencies sending two audits per month each = ten audits, $2,970 revenue, 20–30 hours work.
Audit delivery timeline
Promise 5 business day turnaround. Day 1: intake and GBP access. Day 2–3: checklist completion and screenshots. Day 4: executive summary draft. Day 5: Loom recording and delivery call scheduled. Speed is a differentiator — owners who request an audit are often comparing two providers.
Bundle audit with reputation management pitch when review score is below 4.3 — natural upsell path from GMB audit to reviews retainer without feeling like a bait-and-switch.
Multi-location audit pricing
Roll-up clients with 5–20 locations: charge $150–$250 per location for audit, $99/location/mo for ongoing management. Use city-level data to prioritize which locations get fixed first — highest search volume markets before rural outliers. Present a phased roadmap so the client sees ROI in month one, not month twelve.
