Build a Trades Marketing Portfolio Before You Have Clients
How web, SEO, and GMB freelancers create credible case studies and sample work for HVAC and plumbing owners when your client list is empty.
13 min read · Updated September 21, 2025
A trades owner does not hire you because you went to a good design school. They hire you because you can show another plumber's phone ringing more after you fixed their Google presence. When you have zero clients, that feels impossible. It is not. You build a portfolio from public audits, spec redesigns, and pro bono pilots that convert to paid work within 60 days.
This guide is for freelancers selling websites, SEO, GMB, or bundled local marketing to home service businesses. It complements web design prospecting playbooks by solving the credibility gap before your first paid invoice.
What trades owners actually look for
Owners scan your portfolio for three things in under 90 seconds: businesses like theirs (HVAC, not ecommerce), geography that feels familiar (Texas, not 'national brands'), and results they understand (more calls, more reviews, faster site). They do not care about your Figma skills. They care whether you have done this before for someone who runs trucks.
- Before/after Maps screenshot for a money keyword.
- Mobile site load time improvement on a trades template.
- Review count growth over 90 days on a GMB profile.
- One quote from an owner or manager (even a beta client).
Portfolio piece 1: the public competitive audit
Pick a real business from your prospect list that has clear gaps. Build a 5-page PDF or Notion doc: GMB checklist, website teardown, top 3 competitors in the local pack, and 10 prioritized fixes. Do not send it unsolicited to 500 people. Use it as your portfolio centerpiece and offer it to prospects on discovery calls. Label it 'Sample audit for [City] HVAC market' so it is honest spec work.
Spend 3–4 hours making it polished. One great audit beats five mediocre mockups. Link to it from your website, LinkedIn featured section, and proposal template.
Find audit subjects in your target metro
Browse roofing operators with high neglect scores. each one is a portfolio audit waiting to happen.
Portfolio piece 2: the spec website redesign
Choose a local plumber with a terrible 2014 WordPress site. Rebuild the homepage in Webflow, Framer, or WordPress as a spec project. Use their real business name only if you plan to pitch them; otherwise use a fictional 'Summit Plumbing Co.' with realistic copy. Show: click-to-call above fold, service area map, license badges, and 3 testimonial placeholders. Record a 3-minute Loom walkthrough.
Pitch the spec to the real business
Many freelancers land their first paid project by building a spec site for an actual prospect and saying: 'I already drafted what your homepage could look like. Want to see it?' Conversion rate on that pitch runs 15–25% when the current site is objectively bad.
Portfolio piece 3: the GMB transformation mockup
Screenshot a neglected GMB profile. Create a side-by-side mockup in Canva: left is current (no photos, wrong category, stale posts), right is your recommended state (new cover, 12 photos, weekly post calendar, Q&A seeded). GMB specialists can close $500/mo retainers with this single visual. No client required.
Portfolio piece 4: the beta client offer
Message 10 high-neglect prospects: 'I'm building my trades portfolio. I'll run your GMB and local SEO for $400/mo for 90 days (normally $1,200). You get results, I get a case study and testimonial.' Cap at one beta per trade per city. Written agreement: they allow you to share metrics and screenshots. One beta client becomes your anchor case study for the next 20 pitches.
Portfolio piece 5: the results one-pager
Even without a client, document your own process results: 'Audited 40 HVAC profiles in Phoenix. Average gaps: 6.2 missing photos, 4.1 wrong categories, 0.8 posts per year.' That shows systematic thinking. After your first beta, replace with real numbers: calls, rankings, reviews.
Where to host your portfolio
- Simple one-page site on your domain (not Behance alone).
- Notion public page for audits if you move fast.
- PDF deck for email attachment (under 5 MB).
- Loom playlist linked from proposals.
- Google Drive folder only for active proposals, not public marketing.
Copy and testimonials without clients
Use process testimonials until you have client quotes: 'Clear audit, no fluff' from a fellow freelancer who reviewed your work. After beta, get a 2-sentence owner quote on video if possible. Text is fine: 'We went from 3 Maps calls a week to 11.' Trades owners trust other trades owners more than your bio.
What not to put in a trades portfolio
- SaaS dashboards and startup landing pages as lead examples.
- Stock photography-only redesigns with no local context.
- Guaranteed ranking claims you cannot defend.
- Work under NDA that you cannot show or describe.
- Fifteen projects with no depth on any of them.
Honesty matters
Label spec work as spec work. Owners respect transparency. Passing mockups off as paid client work destroys trust when they ask for a reference call.
60-day portfolio build schedule
- Days 1–7: one competitive audit PDF for your primary trade and city.
- Days 8–14: spec homepage redesign plus Loom.
- Days 15–21: GMB before/after mockup.
- Days 22–45: close one beta client at discount.
- Days 46–60: publish results one-pager, update site, start outbound.
Turning portfolio into paid projects
Every portfolio piece needs a CTA: 'Want this for [Business Name]? Book 15 minutes.' On cold calls, lead with the audit: 'I put together a short review of your Google presence. Can I send it?' Portfolio is not a museum. It is a sales tool. Update it every 60 days with fresher examples as you close clients.
Presentation tips on sales calls
Share your screen on discovery calls and walk through the audit PDF page by page. Pause after the competitor comparison slide and ask: 'Does this match what you see when you search on your phone?' Owners engage when they recognize their own Maps listing next to a rival they already resent. Keep portfolio samples trade-specific during the call. If you are pitching a plumber, do not show roofing work first.
Save a 'mobile view' screenshot of every portfolio piece. Trades owners review proposals on phones between jobs. PDFs that look great on desktop but require pinch-zoom lose deals.
Maintaining portfolio freshness
Set a calendar reminder every 60 days to replace your oldest spec example with a newer audit from your current target metro. Rankings and competitors change. A 14-month-old Maps screenshot makes you look inactive. After your third paying client, retire all spec work and lead with paid case studies only.
Pair portfolio building with competitor audits (see our audit guide) and your first-90-days plan. Freelancers who ship three portfolio pieces in month one book calls faster than freelancers who wait for a perfect website.
